MMI CHRISTMAS PARTY !
December 14, 2010 - MMI gathered this week for some Christmas fun and cheer! Our annual Christmas Party was a great success, thanks to the hard work of Debbie Doudiet, Tabitha Vasquez, Sheryl Dutchin and other "Elves". Department members and special guests enjoyed delicious food, Christmas music, entertaining games, and overall good cheer. Our scientific company representatives were especially generous this year, providing Christmas presents for everyone! Many thanks to all those who made donations to our Mitten Tree.

Summer Student Research Day
The annual MMI Summer Student Research Day took place on Wednesday, August 4 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm in the upper Katz atrium. Our undergraduate Summer Students presented their work in the form of poster displays. Their posters were very impressive and the afternoon turned out to be very informative and educational. Prizes were awarded for the top four posters: Dana MacIntyre (Pukatzki lab), Medgine Mathurin (Mengel lab), Alexei Mokhammed (Anderson lab) and Sheila Wang (West lab).
Our thanks to Dr. Stefan Pukatzki for organizing this event, our judges and to Sheryl Dutchin and Tabitha Vasquez who made sure everything went smoothly. Click here for pictures.

Lumberhacks Triumph at MMI Bonspiel 2010!
The Tyrrell Lab hosted the TGIF on Friday, March 26, bringing out our inner Rock Stars with the interactive video game Rock Band. True to the April Fools theme, nobody minded getting up and being a bit foolish for a good cause - donations went to the Youth Emergency Shelter and entered the donor in a draw for a very cool RC guitar. Rachel Erdmann of the Elliott lab was the lucky winner. Thanks to those who participated and donated. And many thanks to the Tyrrell lab for the the fun, the great refreshments and a truly memorable TGIF. For more pictures, Click Here.

Valentine's Day Was Never So Sweet!
Students Branawan Gowrishankar, Kristin Burles and Qasim Hirani shared the love by delivering Valentine Candygrams throughout the Department on February 12. Department members could send their valentine a Candygram, complete with a card, by contributing 50 cents to Haiti Relief. Qarim offered "Giant Microbes" on sale to benefit IMINSA and Haiti Relief. Thanks to Branawan, Kristin and Qasim for making our Valentine celebrations so memorable and supporting a good cause!
New Canadians, Eh?
Drs. Kevin Kane and Hanne Ostergaard have reason to celebrate - they were officially sworn in as new Canadian citizens on Thursday, January 7, 2010. The Department marked this very special occasion with a party, including Tim Horton's Coffee, Canadian Flag cakes and a uniquely Canadian gift - after all, what Canadian music library is complete without the signature sound of "Stompin"Tom Connors? MMI sends warmest congratulations to our newest Canadians. For more pictures, Click Here.
